We first discovered Frostrail back in April 2025, and since then, the frozen survival FPS has caught the attention of many Metro fans. Its closed beta has now come to an end with more than 70,000 participants, while the game has reached another major milestone with over 500,000 wishlists on Steam. It's an impressive achievement for the title developed by FakeFish and published by Shiro Unlimited.

Frostrail attracts over 70,000 players during its closed beta

Frostrail has just completed an important stage of its development. More than 70,000 players took part in the closed beta, with the test generating plenty of livestreams and videos shared by the community.

FakeFish now plans to use the feedback collected during this testing phase to continue refining the experience.

The closed beta also helped fuel growing interest in the project. Frostrail has now surpassed 500,000 wishlists on Steam, a significant milestone for an independent survival FPS.

Why is Frostrail catching the attention of Metro fans?

The comparisons to Metro come naturally due to several elements found in Frostrail. The game is a survival FPS set in a devastated, frozen world inhabited by revenants and terrifying creatures emerging from the Void.

The adventure can be played solo or in co-op. Players explore frozen wastelands, search ruins and wreckage, gather resources, and craft weapons and equipment to continue their journey.

However, leaving the safety of your shelter always comes with a risk. The cold itself becomes an enemy, with blizzards making travel increasingly difficult while warmth becomes an essential resource that must be carefully managed.

Abandoned bunkers, ruined fortresses, and hostile underground areas promise dangerous expeditions where traveling farther from your main means of transportation means taking increasingly greater risks.

Frostrail's train becomes a mobile fortress

The biggest feature that sets Frostrail apart can be found on the rails. Players travel aboard an armored steam train that serves as a shelter, a means of transportation, and an upgradeable mobile base.

Players will need to fuel the Eden Engine and manage its power to keep moving through the frozen wasteland. The train can then be reinforced as the dangers encountered throughout the journey become increasingly severe.

New cars can be added to the train, while weapon workshops, crafting stations, and storage areas gradually allow players to transform their convoy into a true mobile fortress.

This mechanic is directly tied to exploration. Every expedition away from the train forces players to choose between continuing the search for valuable resources or heading back to the safety and warmth of the convoy before the coldor the creatures lurking outsideoverwhelm them.

500,000 Steam wishlists put Frostrail in the spotlight

With more than 70,000 players taking part in its closed beta and over 500,000 wishlists on Steam, Frostrail has already attracted a significant audience ahead of its release.

Its combination of FPS combat, survival mechanics, co-op exploration, and management of an armored train gives the game an immediately recognizable identity. Players will now have to wait and see what's next for Frostrail as development continues following this first major testing phase.
